Grade 1 Curriculum Overview

Language Arts – Grade 1 students are immersed in language throughout the day.  Instruction occurs in many environments: centers, small group, partner work, hands-on experiences, and direct instruction.  Students have the opportunity to read and learn with both grade level text and text at each child’s appropriate level.  In order to become a better reader, students must READ – for fun, for learning, for discovering new ideas.  Writing is also emphasized throughout the day.  Students are exposed to narrative, opinion and persuasive writing during the year.

Mathematics – Students are working on building addition and subtraction fact fluency, solving and writing how they solved problems.  Students are encouraged to look at numbers in groups of ten to provide a better sense of numbers and how they work together.  Repetition and practice of math facts at home will help students gain fluency and help master the skills taught in school.

Science – Our first-grade scientists begin the year learning to think like scientist.  Then they will be exploring the objects in the sky, sound and light, as well as plants and animals in the spring.

Social Studies – The students will be exploring what makes a community.  They learn to understand the benefits and responsibilities of living in a community.  They will also explore the what makes people the same, while appreciating our differences.

Meet our 1st Grade Teachers:

Mrs. O'Toole - Hello! I am Ms. Maura O’Toole, 1st Grade Teacher at Troy Hills School. After a 12-year telecommunications career, where I lived in California and New York City, I went back to William Paterson and obtained my teaching certification and Master of Arts in Teaching. I have since gone on to acquire certification as a Reading Specialist. Having taught first grade for most of my 10+ year teaching career, I absolutely love watching the young students grow as learners and human beings. The whole process is extremely rewarding. In my free time I love to spend time with my family, read, play tennis, and knit. I also love to travel and share my experiences with my students.

Mrs. Martin Hello!  Let me introduce myself.  My name is Victoria Martin and I am a first-grade teacher at Troy Hills School.  I have been teaching for the past twenty-seven years and I have been at Troy Hills School for the past twenty-four years.  My first teaching job was as a pre-school teacher and then, as a second-grade teacher.  I came to Troy Hills many years ago and taught third grade.  I became a first-grade teacher twenty-two years ago. This is where I found my passion and purpose in life!

I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Kutztown University and my Master’s Degree from Centenary College.  I am now a clinical faculty member at Montclair State University.  I enjoy being a mentor to new teachers and I absolutely love being a “Target Teach” teacher for seniors from Parsippany High School.  It is amazing to work with my former first graders who are now seniors interested in becoming teachers.

When I am not at school, I spend my time with my husband and our two sons.  On Saturdays, you will find me at Absegami High School where I am a volunteer for the “Wrestling Booster Club”.   I love photography, scrapbooking, painting and of course, those of you who know me, know I love...Winnie-the-Pooh!
